about

This song was inspired from the character, Kaladin Stormblessed, in the fantasy novel, The Way of Kings, book 1 of The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. Strong themes of death, loss, betrayal, and redemption permeate these books and (I hope) the lyrics I've written as well! Enjoy!

lyrics

Slavebranded

Sold into captivity, betrayed by a “righteous” man
A valiant knight most radiant, true wielder of the blade
Blood, death, failure, pain, the loss of brother, friend
Driving despair, maddened grief, sorrow commands the end

Somehow she called him out, this light from another world
A bond emerged, strong like the sun, bright as a gem unfurled
She laughs so easily, his heart callused to hate
Bought for a price not worth a stone, lowliest of all men
On the shattered planes, his fate
Expected to die, not last the first battle-

Cry, look to the heavens
Arrows descend
All around
Blood curdling screams
Fall, the mighty
Kill
Nightmares Crea-
-tures from the deep flame

Slavebranded, fight to protect the weak
A savior’s life given death
Protects even enemies
The journey, of a man’s blessed destination
Honor guard breaks stoic heart of men

Yet life as a slave, forced into the mouth of hell
Time and time and time and time again

Shattered chasm
Release
Fallen husk
Of former self
Shattered chasm
The Last choice
A man, burdened, shamed

Shattered chasm
The brave
plunge
into the void
Shattered chasm
Escape
Made honorable

Yet there she was floating at his side, this light lost and found again
So innocent and unaware of his great peril
But why does she care and want to help this wretch
She does not know herself, yet drawn to his former life
Save and protect the weak
Untrained youths, hopelessly awaiting death on the

Battlefield they
Bare the bridge racing across
Broken landscapes
Fall, the mighty
Kill
Nightmare Crea-
-tures from the deep flame

Slavebranded, fight to protect the weak
A savior’s life given death
Protects even enemies
The journey, a man’s blessed destination
Honor guard breaks stoic heart of men

Storm light,
Glowing forth the rage inside
Trapped within a glass prison
Once breathed by Ancients, now again
Honor’s friend,
Bond the worthy hearts of men
Betrayers of the oath,
Desolation, bringers of war

Mystic warblade
Shunned and betrayed
Honorbond broken, cracked
Now the object
Of desire
Wars fought over a corpse
A corpse to wield
Rejected
Will redemption
Find sweet release?

Never run from those in need
Seek to save a life with my last breath
